Chess Endgames: The Essential Positions Every Player Should Know
Endgames have an image problem. They arrive after the excitement, they involve few pieces, and the material tends to be sparse enough that beginners assume the outcome is already decided. It is not. An extra pawn converts to a win only with technique, and a lost position holds far more drawing resources than most players ever discover. What makes the endgame worth studying is that it is the one phase where knowledge translates almost directly into points — a player who knows the Philidor defence will save half-points that an equally strong opponent simply throws away.

Why the endgame rewards study
Opening theory shifts. Engines refute lines, fashions move on, and preparation from five years ago quietly rots. Endgame knowledge does not. The technique for winning a rook and pawn against a rook was worked out in the eighteenth century and has never needed revision. Study it once and it pays out for the rest of your playing life.
There is a second argument, less obvious. Endgames teach calculation with clean feedback. With six pieces on the board you can often calculate to the end and verify whether you were right, which is exactly the training that improves middlegame accuracy. Many coaches start beginners on endgames for precisely this reason, once the basics of how to play chess are secure. Endgames also arrive far more often than beginners expect: play chess for an evening at a slow control and a good share of those games will still be running at move forty.
The king becomes a fighting piece
The single largest conceptual shift is the king's role. Through the opening and middlegame it hides, and rightly so. Once the queens and most minor pieces have gone, there is nothing left to mate it, and the king becomes a strong attacker — roughly the value of a minor piece, active in all eight directions.
Endgames are routinely decided by which king got to the centre first. A player who spends two moves activating their king while the opponent grabs a distant pawn is usually the one winning ten moves later. The practical rule: in a simplified position, if you cannot find a better move, walk the king toward the centre or toward the pawns that matter.
Opposition and the square of the pawn
The opposition means the kings face each other with one square between them and the opponent to move. Because the king must move, it must give ground, and whoever holds the opposition controls which squares the other king can reach. In king and pawn endings this frequently decides the whole game — the attacker needs the opposition to escort a pawn through, and the defender needs it to hold the pawn back.
The square of the pawn is a shortcut that saves calculation. Draw an imaginary square using the pawn's distance to the promotion rank as its side, extending toward the defending king. If that king can step inside the square when it is his move, he catches the pawn. If not, the pawn queens. It takes a second to check and removes the need to count moves one at a time.
King and pawn endgames
These are the foundation, because every other endgame can simplify into one. A few positions are worth knowing exactly rather than approximately.

Beyond those, two concepts carry most of the load. Key squares are the squares in front of a pawn that, if occupied by the attacking king, guarantee promotion regardless of whose move it is. The outside passed pawn wins games by decoying the enemy king to one wing while your own king harvests pawns on the other — a mechanism worth recognising, because it turns a nominally equal position into a technical win.
Rook endgames: Lucena and Philidor
Rook endgames occur more often than every other type of endgame combined, and two positions cover an enormous share of practical cases.
The Lucena position is the winning technique. The attacking side has a rook and a pawn on the seventh rank with the king in front of it, and the defending king cut off on an adjacent file. The winning method is called building a bridge: the rook goes to the fourth rank, the king emerges, and when checks come the rook interposes to block them permanently. Without the bridge the position is only a draw, which is why so many players fail to convert it.
The Philidor position is the drawing technique, and arguably the most valuable single piece of endgame knowledge there is. Defending against rook and pawn, the defender places their rook on the third rank, preventing the enemy king from advancing. The moment the pawn steps onto that third rank, the rook drops to the eighth and delivers endless checks from behind, with the pawn no longer providing shelter. It is a handful of moves and it saves games at every level.
Two supporting principles: rooks belong behind passed pawns, yours or your opponent's, because the rook gains scope as the pawn advances; and cutting the enemy king off along a rank or file is often worth more than a pawn. Recognising when these positions are approaching is itself a skill, and it is one reason a coherent set of chess openings helps — you learn which structures steer toward endgames you handle well.
Bishops, knights and the pieces that draw
Opposite-coloured bishops are the great drawing mechanism. With one bishop each on different colours, neither can challenge the other, and the defender can often blockade on the colour their bishop controls even a full two pawns down. In the middlegame with other pieces still on, the same imbalance favours the attacker, since the extra bishop is effectively a free attacker on one colour complex.
Bishop versus knight depends on the position rather than the piece. Bishops thrive in open positions with pawns on both wings, where their range crosses the board in a move. Knights prefer closed structures with fixed pawn chains and secure outposts, where their ability to jump matters more than their slowness.
Knowing the drawn material combinations is also practical: king and bishop against king, king and knight against king, and king and two knights against a bare king cannot be forced to mate. Recognising these lets you head for them when defending, and avoid trading into them when winning.
The basic checkmates
- King and queen vs king. Push the enemy king to the edge with the queen a knight's move away, then bring your own king up and mate. Watch for stalemate — it is the only way to fail.
- King and rook vs king. Cut the king off along a rank or file, shrink the box, use your king to take opposition, deliver mate on the edge.
- Two bishops vs king. Drive the king to a corner using the bishops on adjacent diagonals with the king supporting. Slower, and worth practising because it appears rarely enough to be forgotten.
Endgame principles worth carrying
Activate the king. Put rooks behind passed pawns. Create a passed pawn and push it. Trade pieces when ahead in material, trade pawns when behind. Do not rush — in most endgames there is no clock pressure from the position itself, and improving a piece before committing costs nothing. Above all, calculate concretely: endgame positions are small enough that general principles get overruled by exact variations more often than in any other phase.
Endgames need repetition to stick, and the most efficient way to get it is volume of real games.
